ORS_Industry_Awards_6_August_2010_-_Di.jpg

ORROROO COMMUNITY GYM WIN 2010 be active COMMUNITY PHYSICAL ACTIVITY INITIATIVE AWARD

Orroroo Community Gym Inc was honoured with accolades from the Office for Recreation & Sport and industry leaders at the 2010 be active Recreation & Sports Industry Awards, held at the National Wine Centre on Friday 6 August.

The be active Recreation & Sports Industry awards recognize outstanding achievements & celebrate the vital role that recreation and sports play in building active healthy communities.

The Community Gym nominated for the "be active" awards and entered into two categories, "Building Communities" and "Community Physical Activity Initiatives."

The awards seek to recognise sporting groups and communities who encourage participation in physical activity, particularly those groups who may not have easy access to sporting facilities either by distance and isolation, or due to physical ability.  They also recognise specific events, and individuals who have contributed time and effort to various organisations.

The Orroroo Community Gym Inc was a finalist in the two categories in which it nominated, and was a winner in the "be active Community Physical Activity Initiatives Award", receiving a certificate, trophy and cheque for the gym.

The great work of the be active Field Officer Program was also acknowledged on the night with Touch Football South Australia winning the Excellence in Regional & Remote Development Award.  TFSA was nominated for both awards for our pilot management structure of new competitions in the Riverland & Port Pirie regions.

A total of eleven awards were awarded throughout the night with all winners then eligible to win the Ministers Award for Excellence, which is presented to the most outstanding finalist from all the award categories.  Touch Football South Australian was the recipient of the Ministers Award for Excellence for 2010.

Rail Trail Connects Stone Hut & Laura

Rail Trail Connects Stone Hut & Laura

(article courtesy of Northern Areas Council Newsletter, June 2010)

Northern Areas Council has completed construction of a 7.6km trail from Stone Hut to Laura following along the disused rail corridor.

Equal funding was received through the Federal Government's Regional & Local Community Infrastructure Program; the Southern Flinders Regional Tourism Authority as well as Council contributing a third of the total cost of $86,941.

The Rail Trail compliments existing mountain biking trails in the region, offering a scenic, low-lying route between Laura and Stone Hut.

"Naturally, the old rail line has low undulations and therefore the Rail Trail offers a family friendly or low-impact cycle or walk between the two towns.  The community has already been using the trail with cyclists jumping on to give it a try", Manager Community Development Rebecca Jeisman said.

The Laura-Stone Hut Rail Trail is stage one of the Southern Flinders Regional Tourism Authority's greater plan to develop the disused corrider from Yacka to Wilmington.  Whilst funding has not been received for further developments, Council is working closely with the Authority to take advantage of future opportunities.

"Council is keen to see the plans for the entire Rail Trail development come to fruition due to the expected economic and social benefits it will bring to communities along the route.  We are already seeing these benefitrs from the completed Laura - Stone Hut section", Mrs Jeisman said.

(article courtesy of Goyders Line Gazette - July 2010)

This month, the District Council of Orroroo Carrieton, the Orroroo Golf Club and Southern Flinders Ranges Tourism Authority completed the construction of a new cycle trail in the Pekina Creek and Golf Course.

The new trail is green/white designated cycle trail designed for less expereinced riders and families.  The trail will compliment the existing intermediate cycle trail that was constructed last year.

The District Council of Orroroo Carrieton would like to thank the Golf Club members and committee who assisted Council and the Over The Edge Trail consultants with the design and location of the track.

The completed track is a great cycle ride with great scenery and wildlife.  We encourage the community and visitors to the area to cycle or walk the track, which starts from the new Golf Clubhouse.

Take a Breather Charity Challenge

Like fun and adventure in the outdoors?

Keen to be challenged for a great cause on Saturday 26 June 2010? (No experience necessary).

Register for the Take a Breather – Charity Challenge.

Rogaining is an outdoor strategy and adventure sport for all ages. Participants can walk, run or ride (mountain bike) in teams of 2 to 5 people, navigating with a map and compass to collect points at hidden markers. Some people call it ‘adventure racing’ – there are no age or fitness restrictions so anyone can do it!

‘Take a Breather’ from everyday life in beautiful Bundaleer Forest. Set your own goal and travel anywhere from 5 to 40 kms on foot or mountain bike.

Take a Breather is for having fun and breathing in fresh air. The Charity Challenge is for Asthma. Breathe Better so others can simply breathe…

There is a fundraising element to the Challenge whereby participants can choose to raise money for our cause. Asthma is one of the most widespread, long-term and persistent health problems in Australia with 1 in 9 children and 1 in 10 adults affected. All funds raised will assist the Foundation to provide services and education to South Australians living with asthma and other respiratory conditions.

With your help we can make ‘Take a Breather’ a successful, rewarding and fun event.

Visit www.takeabreather.com.au for more information and to register for the event. For more information, call the Asthma Foundation of SA on 08 8238 9300.

Thank you for your continued support, we look forward to seeing you there!
